France: School occupied to provide housing for asylum seekers
Parents and their children occupied an elementary school in the French town of Vaulx-en-Velin in support of a family of Albanian asylum seekers on Tuesday. The Vulaj family, who left their government-mandated accommodation, face the threat of living on the streets.
The family was offered five days in an emergency shelter, but were required to leave on Sunday due to limited space. Supporters say the father is suffering from ill health, and that the family is the target of a violent vendetta in Albania.
Parents, whose children went to the same school as the Vulaj boys and girls, agreed they should stay in the school until the mayor arranges new, suitable accommodation for them. During the rally the family's supporters designed colourful posters and banners in support of the Vulajs. They also started a petition, which will be presented to the mayor on Wednesday.
