
Ukraine: Self-defence militias guard checkpoints around Lugansk
Local self-defence militias continue to man checkpoints around Lungask Monday as pro-Kiev forces take over several settlements in the Lugansk region in eastern Ukraine.
Militia member "Varan", who is manning the last checkpoint separating territory controlled by the local self-defence militias around Lugansk and that controlled by pro-Kiev forces, said that at "3:40 a.m. mortar fire was opened at the checkpoint of people's militia."
Pro-Kiev forces took control over the 'Metallist' settlement Monday as the get closer to Lugansk, located some 9 km away. Another settlement near Lugansk, called 'Schastie', was taken over by the Ukrainian army on Saturday.
According to the Lugansk People's Republic leader Valery Bolotov, the Republic lost roughly 100 people, including both militia members and civilians, during fighting on Tuesday and Friday.
