Germany: Explorer remains trapped in Germany's deepest cave
Injured mountain explorer Johann Westerhaus remained trapped in Germany's deepest cave near Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps on Friday, with specialist emergency service teams from Switzerland and Italy continuing their rescue operation.
Trapped almost 1,000 metres (3,280 ft) below ground in a rock fall in the Bavarian Alps since Sunday, it has been revealed the explorer has a head injury following two doctors going into the cave to examine Mr Westerhaus.
Around four kilometres (2.5 miles) of safety rope has been laid out within the cave, a long vertical descent which is said to be formidable with its deep plunge. It is hoped the rescue operation to pull the explorer out will be done with the technique of pulleys, as only one person can travel through the cave bottleneck at a time.
