UK: Cyclists draw a line in the sand over car deaths
Hundreds of cyclists took part in a "draw-in and die-in" in London on Wednesday evening, protesting the lack of bicycle lanes across the city that have led to dozens of deaths since the current government came to power in 2010.
The protest took part at a junction in south London's Elephant and Castle where a 47-year man was killed last Tuesday when his bicycle was hit by a heavy goods vehicle (HGV). It was the fifth death of a cyclist in London this year.
The protest involved drawing a bicycle lane on part of the sidewalk near the junction as a proposal to avoid further incidents. Cyclists and supporters then lay to each side of the lane for 10 minutes in mourning of the 59 cyclists who have died in London since 2010. The event was organised by the direct action group Stop Killing Cyclists.
