Russia: Police uncover $120m hoard of precious gems
Police in the Russian city of Kaliningrad swooped on more than 29 tons of illegal amber hidden in an abandoned German fortification on Thursday, which they say could have pulled in a street value of around €87 million ($120m). Footage, provided by the police service of the city, shows the moment of discovery in the basement of the Prussian-era fort.
According the Interior Ministry, officers found the haul after being alerted by a two-year investigation into Amber baron Viktor Bogdan, who is suspected of criminal tax evasion totalling more than 350 million rubles.
The Ministry said that the precious stones were destined to be smuggled and illegally sold, with the proceeds going towards the support of an organised crime group.
