Taiwan: Thousands rally against nuclear in fear of another Fukushima
Several thousand people protested Saturday in front of Taiwan's presidential office in Taipei against a planned nuclear power plant. Protesters shouted the slogan "End nuclear power in 2014," a phrase which rhymes in Chinese.
Construction on Taiwan's fourth nuclear power plant is nearly complete, but opposition from both environmental groups as well as skepticism in the general population have brought the process to a halt. Since the Fukushima nuclear disaster hit Japan in 2011, skepticism over nuclear power has grown in Taiwan, which like Japan, is prone to earthquakes that could trigger a tsunami.
Taiwan's government is in favour of holding a referendum on the issue. About one fifth of Taiwan's electricity is produced via nuclear energy.
