USA: Greenwald and Poitras receive journalism award
American journalist Glenn Greenwald and American documentary film maker Laura Poitras, as well as journalists from The Guardian and The Washington Post, accepted the George Polk award for outstanding journalism in New York City on Friday.
Poitras dedicated to the award to former CIA analyst and whistleblower Edward Snowden for "sacrificing his life" for making NSA information publicly available.
Greenwald said it is unacceptable that Snowden's revelation of confidential information means he is threatened with decades in prison, and that journalists have to defend the rights of their sources as well as their own.
Greenwald and Poitras' arrival in the USA for the collection of their awards marks the first time since the leaking of NSA documents that the two have returned to American soil.
