Spain: Catalonia referendum illegal, says government
The Spanish government said that Catalonia cannot unilaterally decide on the future of the whole country, in a statement read by First Secretary of Congress Ignacio Gil Lazaro ahead of the parliamentary vote on a referendum on Catalonia's independence, in Madrid on Tuesday.
The proposal which had been submitted by the Catalonian region was rejected by a large majority on the vote on Tuesday. Catalonian President Artur Mas had called for the referendum to take place on November 9, regardless of the Spanish parliament's approval.
