Kazakhstan: Prime Minister Akhmetov resigns, Masimov takes his place
Kazakh Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov resigned Wednesday in Astana, he was the longest serving prime minister of the post-Soviet era. President Nursultan Nazarbayev accepted the resignation of Akhmetov and his government. No reason was given for Akhmetov's abrupt decision to leave office.
Under Kazakh law a given government automatically resigns with the prime minister. President Nazarbayev then officially proposed candidacy of Karim Masimov, which was approved by the Mazhilis members from all parties in the parliament. Before the appointment as prime minister, Masimov was heading the presidential administration.
