USA: Texans fear AK-47 ammo shortage amid US-Russian tension over Ukraine

Austin gun shop owner Michael Cargill has urged Kalashnikov lovers to buy up as many AK-47s and as much Russian-made 7.62×39mm ammunition supplies as they can. Cargill gave the call to arms after hearing reports that Russia had halted ammunition exports to the US. This could potentially limit supply of the AK-47 itself since its use requires the Russia-made ammo.

The reason behind this panic is down to the popularity of the AK-47 among the Texas hunting community, who use it to bring down game up to the size of white-tailed deer. The Soviet assault rifle is also favoured by some Texans for plain old target shooting. Texans love the AK largely for the fact that it uses the now prized 7.62×39mm ammunition, which is roughly as powerful as the 30-30 Winchester round but holds the advantage of being a much cheaper alternative.

Despite the panic, however, there is no confirmation that Russia has ceased exporting commercial arms and ammunition to the US.

Cargill’s shop, ‘Central Texas Gun Works’, is one of the most famous gun shops in Austin.
