Libya: Killing of police officers sparks heated road blockades
Street blockades made of damaged traffic signs, boulders and tyres set alight were set up by protesters on Dubai St in Benghazi on Wednesday, sparked by the killings of two police officers by unknown assailants.
The two policemen are reported to have been shot dead by bullets to the head in the Majuri neighbourhood, quickly prompting anxiety to residents across the city that lawlessness by militants was gripping Libya's second city.
Following the fatal shooting of another police officer on Tuesday, Wednesday's events unfolded with boundless road blockades taking place on Airport Road, Twenty Street, Hadiqa Street and Jamal Street, with city shops closed earlier than usual, with fewer cars on the road during rush hour, and numerous protesters keeping the flames of their blockades burning.
