Ukraine: Rodina party leader released from prison

Igor Markov, leader of the Rodina (Motherland) party and former member of the Party of Regions' faction in the Ukrainian Rada, was released from a detention centre in Odessa on Tuesday evening.

Dozens of supporters gathered outside the prison cheering as he left the establishment. Earlier on Tuesday, the Primorskiy district court had refused to release Markov and decided to move the case to Crimea, but his supporters occupied the building and began to organise a picket outside using tyres. Another group of supporters blocked the way out of the detention centre to impede Markov's transferral to Crimea.

Igor Markov had been charged with organising and participating in the beating of members of the Svoboda party during a rally against the raising of a monument to the Russian Empress Catherine II in Odessa in 2007.
