Germany: Joachim Gauck welcomes Olympic team back home
German President Joachim Gauck was on hand to greet athletes from the country’s Winter Olympic team as they arrived in Munich following the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Gauck shook the hand of each of the 110 German athletes as they disembarked from the specially chartered Lufthansa flight. The athletes were also congratulated by Munich Mayor Christian Ude.
In a brief statement Michael Vesper, the chairman of the Deutscher Olympischer Sportbund, explained the current situation regarding the biathlete Evi Sachenbacher Stehle.
Germany's 153 athletes won 19 medals in total at the Winter Games, with eight gold, six silver and five bronze medals. The haul was good enough for sixth-place among all nations competing.
