China: Valentine lanterns mark the end of Chinese New Year
Heart shaped lanterns were released into the sky at the Taiwan lantern festival on Friday, marking the end of Chinese New Year. The date of the festival is calculated according to the lunar calendar and this year the festivity fell on the same date as St. Valentine's Day.
Thousands of spectators gathered at the hills of Pingxi, north of the island, to write their wishes for the coming year on the lanterns before releasing them.
According to tradition, the longer and higher the lantern flies, the better chance the wish will come true.
