El Salvador: Most active volcano puts San Miguel on orange alert
Ash exploded and rose 500 metres (546 yards) from Chaparrastique volcano in San Miguel on Wednesday, in response the Governor told the press that the town is now on orange alert Thursday.
Since January there has been ongoing seismic activity underneath the volcano, which prompted the military to arrive in preparation for the evacuation of residents.
Chaparrastique volcano is the most active in the country and it last erupted December 29. Local press reports that the department of Civil Protection has identified around 60 families who are most at risk - due to their proximity to the site - and has put together evacuation plans to safeguard the health and safety of vulnerable communities.
