Marius the giraffe, one of the attractions at Copenhagen zoo, came to a premature end on Sunday when zoo workers put down the 18-month-old animal before performing a dissection in front of a live audience.
Despite thousands of signatures on a petition to save the animal, zoo officials carried out the destruction in accordance with European rules on inbreeding, which forbid Marius to breed with his closely-related peers. Marius was fed a last meal of rye bread before being killed with a shot to the head from a bolt gun.
Some of the giraffe's remains will be bound for research, while some is reserved for the consumption of the zoo's lion population.
