France: Pope's 'bad boy' Harley pulls more than 200 grand at auction

The sweet 1,585cc Dyna Super Glide Harley-Davidson, a donation from Pope Francis himself, pulled a whopping €210,000 ($285,000) at an auction in the Gran Palais of Paris on Thursday. Exceeding all predictions and expectations, the price seemed to have almost been set at €190,000 ($257,000) until another last minute bidder raised another €10,000 ($13,500) and kept the auctioneer from hammering the gavel prematurely.

The bike was given to the Pope last June by the Harley-Davidson manufacturer to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the motorcycle maker.

The Pontiff donated the Harley with his signature 'Francis' on the petrol tank last November to the the charity Caritas Roma, along with the matching Harley Davidson jacket which sold for another €50,000 ($67,000). The charity organisation, who works closely with the Catholic Church, says it plans to renovate a hostel and soup kitchen in Rome with the funds raised from the auction.

The auctioneer was Bonham house, a private auction house known for working with highly valuable fine art and antiques.
