Mexico: Family of Edgar Tamayo weep over Texas execution
Mourners marking the death of Edgar Tamayo, a Mexican citizen who was executed by the US state of Texas, gathered in his hometown of Miacatlan in Mexico on Thursday. Mexican government spokesmen have condemned the decision, saying Tamayo was not properly informed of his right to help from the country's consulate.
Men, women and children including members of Tamayo's family marched through the town, holding wreaths of flowers and carrying a portrait of the Virgin Mary. The mourners then gathered outside Tamayo's family home, where they held hands as they performed a communal prayer.
Tamayo was given a lethal injection in what was the 509th execution in Texas since the practice was reinstated in 1976. It is the third time in five years a Mexican has been executed in similar circumstances, the others being Jose Ernesto Medellin in 2008 and Humbert Leal Garcia Jr. in 2011.
