Spain: Police tear gas Real Madrid protesters outside stadium
Police deployed tear gas in an attempt to disperse a 200-strong mob of people belonging to Ultras Sur, a radical Real Madrid fan group gathered outside the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, Monday. The Ultras were protesting a ban against them issued by the club ban an altercation outside the stadium before a match against Real Sociedad.
The Ultras, known for their right wing views and acts of hooliganism, chanted slogans against Madrid FC president Florentino Pérez and the fans who would be taking their traditional seats, accessed through gate 28, for the first time.
Expecting a violent reaction form the Ultras to the ban, Madrid FC ensured a high security presence outside the stadium, including eight police vans.
