      Macedonia: Protesters attempt to topple imperial Tsar

      Macedonian Albanians prepared to attack a statue of Serbian Emperor Tsar Dusan on the ‘Bridge of Civilisations’ in Skopje on Friday. The statue was damaged earlier in December, when a group attempted to topple it. A number of Albanian protesters attempted to walk towards the statue on Friday. However, police stood guard.

      Tsar Dusan is one of Serbia's most important historical figures, having established an empire in the Balkans in the 1340s. However, the empire was short-lived, with his son Tsar Dusan the Weak losing most of the territory gained by his father. Dusan the Weak's death led to the collapse of the empire.

      The Albanian protesters oppose the statue as they believe Tsar Dusan symbolises occupation.
