Italy: Smoke and paint bombs hit Turin's finest
Around 1,000 students hit the streets of Turin on Saturday in protest against the austerity policy of Enrico Letta's government. Clashes broke in colourful scenes as smoke and paint bombs were lobbed at the riot police.
After marching from Piazza Arbarello to the Piazza Castello, protesters clashed with police and launched colour bombs which emitted a red smoke. Police used batons in response and several arrests followed. The Italian national military police was then dispatched to secure the entrance of the "Palazzo della Ragione" where the presidential office of the regional council is based.
A government minister warned that the wave of anti-austerity protests in Italy has left the country teetering on the edge of a "spiral of rebellion."
