Belgium: Afghanistan wants US troops to stay - Afghan spokesman

The Afghan government strongly desires the continued presence of US troops in Afghanistan, Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman and Ambassador to Pakistan Janan Mosazai said in Brussels Wednesday. Mosazai's words came as NATO leaders are holding meetings at their headquarters in the Belgian capital.

He said: "And in that context it is the Afghan government's position that we not only desire but support very strongly the signing of the bilateral security agreement with the United States and that it will be signed in good time. What we are seeking at the moment are assurances on two topics. One is the launch of a meaningful, substantive peace process between the Afghan government - specifically the High Peace Council - and the Taliban. Because it is out firm belief, and it is a fact, the bilateral security agreement will be meaningful, will be a strong bedrock for a long-term enduring strategic partnership between Afghanistan and the United States if it serves the purpose of peace and security in Afghanistan."

The Afghan Loya Jirga decided in late November to approve a bilateral security agreement with the United States for the continued presence of Western military troops after the majority of NATO forces withdraw in 2014.
