Ukraine: Pro-EU protesters under siege in monastery
Around 150 people have barricaded themselves inside the grounds of Kiev's Mikhailovsky monastery following a night of violent protests. Berkut special forces have surrounded the premises and are attempting to negotiate with those inside.
Police reportedly used tear gas and baton charges to break up an early Saturday protest on the Ukrainian capital's Independence Square. Protesters expressed dissent over the Ukrainian government's decision not to enter into an association agreement with the European Union.
Many of those inside the Mikhailovsky monastery are nursing injuries sustained during the clashes. They have stacked wooden planks against the monastery's iron gates to barricade themselves in.
