Thailand: Anti-government protesters withstand torrential rainstorm

Despite heavy rain, thousands of protesters demonstrated against the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra at the Democracy Monument in Bangkok, Tuesday.

Protesters also reportedly forced the closure of several government ministries and say they aim to take control of government offices nationwide until Shinawatra steps down. Police have issued a warrant of arrest for campaign leader Suthep Thaugsuban who led a storming of the Finance Ministry earlier in the day.

The movement against Shinawatra's government began a month ago as a campaign led by Suthep Thaugsuban against a political amnesty bill. Protesters say the legislation would allow ousted leader Thaksin Shinawatra, the Prime Minister's brother, to return to Thailand without serving any of a jail sentence already ordered by a court.

Street demonstrations began on Sunday with a massive rally, and have continued in large numbers.
