Russia: Dutch Greenpeace activist Ubels bailed with comrades
Dutch Greenpeace Arctic 30 activist Mannes Ubels was released from prison in St. Petersburg on Wednesday, after two million rubles (€45,000) was paid for his bail.
The 42-year-old Ubels, alongside 29 other crew members aboard the 'Arctic Sunrise,' was detained by Russian authorities after several activists attempted to board a Gazprom oil rig in the Arctic Sea in September. Ubels is charged with hooliganism, after initially being charged with piracy over the protest action. If convicted, he faces up to seven years in prison.
Twenty Greenpeace activist have been granted bail after appearing in court hearings this week. Only the 59-year-old Australian Greenpeace activist Collin Russell's detention was extended for three months on Monday 18.
