France: Burning rubber barricade outside Goodyear factory
Protesting workers continued their demonstration against the closing of the Goodyear Nord tyre factory in Amiens on Tuesday. Around twenty employees burned tyres in front of the factory building, building a temporary barricade across the access road. Protesters say they are planning to continue the action every day until a deal is reached guaranteeing the facility's future.
Workers' unions have waged a five-year legal battle to keep the factory open after rejecting management's demands that they accept changes to pay and working conditions or face layoffs.
The US Titan Tire Corporation has offered to take over part of Goodyear's factory in Amiens, which would save around 335 jobs out of some 1,200 and contribute to an investment of tens of millions of euros to guarantee staff employment for next four years.
