Ukraine: Border fence goes up as European agreement nears
Troops from Russian border protection units constructed a barbed-wire fence to guard a border checkpoint between the nation and its neighbour Ukraine near the town of Lugansk on Monday. Additional security controls may mean longer waiting times for local residents, many of whom count relatives on both sides of the border.
The land border between the two countries stretches over more than 2,000 kilometres in length.
Ukraine, which has signed several cooperation treaties with the European Union, is believed to be close to signing an Association Agreement with the bloc of nations. Russian president Vladimir Putin has warned that provisions on free trade within the treaty may damage economic relations with Russia, and that Ukrainian goods would be barred from enjoying the benefits extended to Customs Union members Belarus and Kazakhstan.
