Russia: Unique underwater assault rifle unveiled in Moscow
An amphibious assault rifle, equally accurate when fired underwater or on dry land, was put on display at the Interpolitex-2013 arms show in Moscow, Wednesday.
Designed by Russia's Tula Instrument Design Bureau, the 685-mm-long ADS automatic rifle can discharge 5.45x39mm cartridges in both environments, firing up to 800 shots per minute at a distance of 500 metres. The ADS boasts improved accuracy and handling when compared to the service-issue, Soviet-designed APS underwater rifle.
Velmezev Maxim, an expert from the KBP Instrument Design Bureau, said: "This rifle is unique because it's capable of firing underwater and over water. Nowadays this kind of development, especially the production of a rifle which is able to fire under water, is not found anywhere in world."
The ADS also features a 40 mm grenade launcher and a range of adjustable sights. Its accuracy and effectiveness are believed to be comparable with the legendary AK-47.
The rifle is set to be adopted by the Russian Ministry of Defence for use by Russia's Far East and Black Sea Fleet. It is planned that the rifle will be available for international export.
