Egypt: Tanks roll against Brotherhood supporters
Violent clashes once again erupted in Cairo's city centre on Friday between supporters of the deposed President Morsi and security forces. So far, reports indicate one death and at least 14 injured amid heavy gunfire and explosions. Pro-Muslim Brotherhood demonstrators had planned to march towards Rabaa al-Adawiya square, the site of several deadly flashpoints in August but were intervened by military tanks.
Riot police clashed with the crowds, firing tear gas and locking down the main roads leading to central Tahrir Square. Egypt's State TV also reported other clashes in the Sharqiya district, a neighbourhood in the northern part of the city.
Thousands of members of the Muslim Brotherhood have been detained in the last two months, including several senior figures such as Mohammed Badie who is being charged for incitement to violence and murder. Morsi supporters have called for an intensification of demonstrations from now and until the lead-up to Sunday's 40th anniversary of the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, while government loyalists say they too will take to the streets against the Brotherhood supporters.
