Denmark: Lights commemorate dark flight from Nazis
Hundreds of people marched through the streets of Copenhagen Tuesday for a torchlight procession before watching a light display on the Oresund Bridge to remember those who fled from the Nazis 70 years ago. The bridge, which links Copenhagen with the Swedish city of Malmo, was bathed in light as a memorial to the Jews who fled Nazi-occupied Denmark in boats for safety in neutral Sweden.
Some 700 lanterns were lit on the artificial island of Peberholm to symbolise that "October 1943 was a light in the darkness." The Elisabeth K571, one of the few boats still in existence from the secret evacuation, took part in the memorial activities, according to Swedish news outlet The Local.
