USA: Nuclear disarmament is in our mutual interest, says US

Disarmament of nuclear weapons is in the world's best interest, US Assistant Secretary of Nuclear and Strategic Policies Anita Friedt said at a United Nations committee meeting in New York, Thursday.

Friedt said: "Madame Vice President, our reason to move to the next steps in disarmament is simple. It is our mutual interest and political insecurity terms. It is a fact that ensuring security instability at lower levels of arms, the work of disarmament in non-proliferation is a shared responsibility- and not for the US and Russia or the five nuclear weapon states alone. All states can help contribute to the conditions for disarmament. And in this context, concerns about non-compliance by a few states with their obligations must be addressed."

Five countries are listed as nuclear-weapon states under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT): Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, France and China. India, Pakistan and North Korea are known to possess nuclear weapons but are not signatories to the NPT, while Israel is thought to have nuclear weapons but has never fully confirmed this.
