Russia: Remote control firefighting vehicle on display at RAE 2013
Omsktransmash, the Russian state-owned Design Bureau of Transport Machinery, presented its SPM firefighting vehicle complete with a remote control option, at the Russia Arms Expo (RAE) 2013 in Nizhny Tagil on Thursday.
The SPM weighs up to 60 tonnes and, with its 840-horsepower engine, can reach a top speed of 40 km/h on paved roads. The vehicle can carry up to 25 cubic metres of water and it can throw water to a distance of about 100 metres. A special feature of the SPM is that it can be operated remotely, thereby ensuring maximum safety for the vehicle's operators in dangerous situations.
The SPM is designed especially to fight fires and carry out rescues operations in high risk areas such as arsenals and ammunition depots. The super heavy vehicle is also used to plow fire lines against forest fires.
