Russia: Navalny rejects election result and demands full data
Moscow mayoral candidate Alexei Navalny claimed that election results were falsified at a press conference Sunday. Moscovites headed to the Russian capital's polling booths to cast a vote for one of six candidates for the post of Moscow mayor. At the time Navalny made his statement, with 10 percent of votes counted, acting mayor Sergey Sobyanin was leading with 55 percent of the vote, with Navalny trailing with 23 percent, according to the Central Election Commission of Moscow.
Addressing the press for the second time this evening, Navalny said: "We consider what is happening now falsification carried out by Moscow administration and by the campaign of Sergey Sobyanin. We demand published data on voter turnout and results of voting on polls equipped with optical scan voting system, without delay. That hasn't been carried out yet. I, as an official candidate, demand this to be done. We don't accept the results that are announced. We won't give up a single vote that we have received."
Navalny was sentenced to five years in prison in July for embezzlement. He was allowed to campaign while free on bail. Outside observers have found no irregularities in voting.
