Russia: Lavrov - bombing won't make Syrian opposition more talkative

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with South African International Relations Minister, Maite Emily Nkoana-Mashabane, in Moscow on Monday. Both criticised any kind of unilateral intervention in Syria and called for the UN charter to be both respected and protected. The Russian FM also discussed the need for objectivity in investigations regarding the alleged use of chemical weapons on August 21st.

In regards to the alleged use of chemical weapons, Lavrov said: "All the eight leaders, including the EU leadership, said that it's unacceptable to use chemical weapons by any party, by any side, and said that any reports of the alleged use of chemical weapons should be investigated on a professional level and on an objective level, and the results of these investigations should be forwarded to the UN Security Council."

Both figures called for a return to the Geneva II Middle East peace conference, which was proposed by the UN.

South African International Relations Minister Maite Emily Nkoana-Mashabane said: "We think a quick return to the Geneva-II is the only solution we see at hand, but that these unilateral intervention approaches that we're hearing about, we think (they are) taking is nowhere but into the darkest alley that will not produce any conducive peaceful resolution to the crisis there."

On Geneva-II, Lavrov was sceptical about its efficacy if military intervention comes to be: "If, right now, the opposition has declined participation in the conference without any military attacks on Syria, then I highly doubt that after strikes are carried out on Syria (if of course we are not lucky enough to escape them, if reason does not triumph), I highly doubt that the opposition will become more talkative. More than likely, it will be the exact opposite."

The two also discussed bilateral and other international issues and expressed their mutual commitment in boosting cooperation in trade. Bilateral trade between South Africa and Russia rose 66.3 percent in 2012.
