Russia: Hysteria intended to derail Geneva conference - Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke to the press at the Foreign Ministry Building in Moscow on Monday. In the press conference, Lavrov questioned the purpose of the Syrian government in perpetrating a chemical attack given the situation and that the attack served to undermine the upcoming Geneva II conference between Russia and the US.

Lavrov said, "What would be the purpose of the Syrian government to use chemical weapons in this situation? I will draw your attention to the fact that chemical attack in Ghouta took place when Russian and American experts were planning to meet in preparation for the Geneva conference. That the hysteria will work against the effectiveness of this forum is without doubt. It is possible this is, in fact, one of the goals of the authors of this news."

He continued to say that, "It is difficult to understand the true motives of our Western colleagues when they have already engaged in destruction interventions in Iraq and Libya and not solved any of the other problems that came out of the Arab Spring in regards to helping the governments concerned with developing stability and inter-faith and inter-ethnic peace. Without solving all of these problems, they begin to make announcements on the highest level that are truly astonishing. They are astonishing because the course that these announcements lay forth is unclear."

In response to a question on Russia's reaction if there were missele strikes without an agreement from the UN Security Council Lavrov said, "We are not going to wage a war against anybody. We still hope and expect that our western partners will build their policies not through reacting but through strategising."
