Russia: Navalny happy to confine campaign to the streets
Opposition blogger, activist and mayoral candidate Alexei Navalny spoke on air on the Moscow based radio station Ekho Moskvy on Monday. He spoke of his political experience, his campaigning and the Kirovles case.
Navalny states that authorities are trying to prevent him from participating in debates in mass media, forcing him to work more actively in the streets and meeting the electorate directly: "we experience strong pressure from the municipal authorities, pressure on radio stations where we want to put our advertisement. They try to destroy media component of our campaign and push us out to the streets and Internet. That's why Alexey Navalny as candidate for mayor and his campaign stuff will work hard to withstand it".
Yet, Navalny went on to state that his experience of three debates broadcast by minor television and radio channels has shown it is more effective for him to use the time campaigning directly, therefore, removing himself from the scheduled discussion on the television channel Moscow Doveriye (Moscow Trust) on August 19. When questioned why, Navalny said: "I don't reject debates - I reject debates on those media platforms that are offered to me".
According to the latest polls, Navalny is leading with about 53 percent support among likely voters. When questioned about his freedom in the face of criminal prosecutions, Navalny said: "I believe that as long as people support me I'll remain free. Thank you, my friends". Navalny was released from custody Friday 19 July, as part of his appeal process.
