Russia: Eastern Russia suffers worst flood in decades

The worst flood in decades continues to threaten and damage the homes of people in the far-eastern Amur region of Russia. 52 settlements are currently suffering as a result of the devastating natural disaster.

Around 3,500 people remain in their partly-flooded houses, continuing the battle for shelter, while more than 4,500 people have been evacuated, half of them children. The level of water already exceeds the rooftops of houses by about 1 metre and still keeps rising, damaging not only the buildings' facades, but also the interiors. Nearly 30 bridges, 320 km of roadbed and 420 thousand hectares of fields have also been flooded.

More than 20,000 people and 1,500 pieces of machinery and equipment are engaged in fighting the floods. The damage has already been evaluated at over one billion rubles (approximately €23 million), but the final figure is expected to be even bigger.
