Russia: Snowden's asylum papers "under consideration" - lawyer
Anatoly Kucherena, one of the top Russian lawyers representing whistleblower Edward Snowden, arrived at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow to talk about the current process involving Snowden and his migration status on Wednesday, July 24.
He said, "I have to tell you that the issue has not been resolved yet. This does not mean that Edward's request has been turned down but we are dealing with a nonstandard situation here, and you have to take into account Russian bureaucracy. So, the papers are still being processed. In my consultations with him we decided to wait a little bit more in the hope that this issue will be resolved shortly." He added, "I don't have a date when the papers will be ready. The Migration Service confirmed to me today that the request is under consideration."
The lawyer stated that Snowden's migration papers are currently being processed and that it will take some time until all issues are resolved and all obstacles are moved out of the way for Snowden to remain in Russia legally. In a recent interview Kucherena announced that Snowden is willing to live and work in Russia and is willing to take his case in front of the court in case his asylum request should be denied.
