Russia: Putin salutes battle-ready troops

The armed forces of Russia's Eastern Military District flexed their martial muscle in the Siberian city of Chita on Wednesday under the watchful gaze of President Vladimir Putin. Putin arrived in the Eastern base, known as "Tsugol", to observe large scale exercises by the Central and Eastern military districts.

The drills were part of snap combat readiness tests ordered by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief on July 13. Across the board inspections aimed at discerning the troops level of training and technical competence in operating armaments. As the exercises entered their final phase, President Vladimir Putin and Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu arrived in a helicopter, swooping low over the training field.

President Vladimir Putin, lauded the army's efficiency but stressed that the battle was not yet won:

"We can be proud of our army today, but I repeat, the exercises are not over. The troops are yet to return to their bases and this is not an easy task either. I can already tell you that on the whole our forces have achieved the goals we set and performed more than satisfactorily. I thank the commanders and all servicemen for their professionalism. I hope that the concluding part of the exercise will be performed with the same speed and quality."

The snap drills deployed 160,000 troops, 70 warships and roughly 1,000 tanks from across Siberia and the far east. Almost two dozen of Russia's Pacific fleet ships and 130 combat aircraft also participated in exercises, reflecting Russia's desire for military mobility and prowess. The operations continue through to July 20.
