Russia: Egypt needs stability, national dialogue - Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasised the need for stability in Egypt while speaking at a press conference with his Malaysian counterpart, Datuk Seri Anifah Aman, in Moscow on Thursday. Lavrov highlighted the importance of national dialogue in the country's transitional period ahead of the next presidential election, expected to take place in early 2014.

Egypt has been divided by the ousting of Morsi, with tensions leading to the deaths of scores of people as anger boils. Lavrov expressed his hopes for calm, saying: "We would like to see stability in Egypt and throughout this region, which currently poses the most serious risk in international affairs."

"We really hope that all the efforts to launch such national dialogue, to stabilize the situation, to organize a transitional period and to prepare free and democratic elections produce positive results," he added.

The Malaysian Foreign Minister will also meet with Chairman of the Foreign Affairs of the State Duma, Alexey Pushkov, while in Moscow.
