Turkey: June's hangover as Istanbul sees running battles

Following a tumultuous month of protest in June, thousands re-converged in Istanbul’s Taksim square, Saturday, clashing with security personnel in the process. Police employed water cannons, shot tear gas and used other dispersion tactics in a bid to stop the occupation of the square, which was broken by Prime Minister Erdogan’s security forces, following a protracted struggle. Protesters have vowed to retake the square.

Protests spread nationwide in June after a section of Taksim Gezi Park was to be developed, reportedly into a military barracks and a mall. Protests mobilised and were broken by police in a manner that was perceived as excessive, which incited violence against the government and security officials.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan was the lightning rod for demonstrators, who saw his political reforms as a process of Islamification of the Turkish secular state.
