Turkey: Turkey: Istanbul intensifies in spite of PMs threats

After police cleared Taksim square and started destroying protesters camps, Saturday, protests have mushroomed throughout Istanbul. Thousands are on the streets of the city and are rallying in tense and fast developing situation. Running battles with the police are reported throughout the city, as police attempt to disperse crowds with water cannons, rubber bullets and tear gas. In response, protesters have barricaded themselves into nearby hotels and buildings. Protesters are also attempting to barricade streets and highways to block police advances using carts, trolleys, cars, trucks and police barricades.

Despite the tension in the city, crowds of protesters are defiantly jubilant as they remain a strong force on the city's streets, in defiance of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his threats against the protest movement. Erdogan warned that protesters would have to leave Taksim Square and Gezi Park by Sunday, but moved security services into the areas on Saturday night, showing he intends to fully reclaim the city's streets after over two weeks of protests.

Five people have been killed - including a police officer - since the protests began, and the Turkish government says that up to 600 police have been injured in clashes while Turkey's Medical Association said that around 5,000 people have sought treatment in hospitals for minor injuries and breathing problems after enduring attacks of tear gas. The fifth confirmed death related to protest violence was announced on Thursday.
