Belgium: FEMEN storm Euro parliament in topless Tunisia protest

FEMEN "sextremists" disrobed outside the European Parliament in Brussels on Wednesday to demand European support for fellow FEMEN activists on trial in Tunisia. Revealing bare breasts daubbed with slogans, such as "Women spring is coming", the activsts rushed towards the Altiero Spinelli building where they held aloft banners and shouted "freedom for FEMEN".

The action follows a similar protest held outside the Tunisian embassy in Paris on Tuesday, where topless FEMEN members called for the immediate release of the detained activists.

French activists Pauline Hillier and Marguerite Stern along with German Josephine Markmann are on trial in Tunisia for offending public decency and threatening pubic order following a demonstration in Tunis, where they undressed outside the Justice Ministry on May 29. They were protesting against the jailing of Tunisian member of FEMEN Amina Tyler.

Tyler posted a photo of herself in February with the slogan "Fuck Your Morals" over her bare breasts on Facebook. She later painted 'FEMEN' on a cemetery wall in Kairouan, an extremely important religious and cultural centre, in protest against a conference and rally called by the conservative Islamic movement Ansar al-Sharia. She is facing several charges, including indecency, carrying pepper spray and desecrating a cemetery.

FEMEN leader Inna Shevchenko has said that if the FEMEN activists were not released following their trial, further protests would be held to exert international pressure for their release.
