Turkey: Gezi Park occupation holds fast

Thousands gather in Gezi Park for another night of activism Wednesday with a festive mood overtaking the crowds. The square has seen five days of fierce clashes between protesters and riot police after the parks planned demolition exploded into a nationwide civil protest movement.

The left wing Public Workers Union Confederation (KESK) of 240,000 members joined the demonstrations on Tuesday, calling a 48-hour strike aimed at improving members' pay and conditions as well as bringing an end to clashes between police and demonstrators.

According to the Turkish Medical Association two people have been killed and over 4,000 injured in six days of protests across twelve cities. Turkish police blasted protesters in Istanbul with torrents of water cannon and tear gas for the fifth night running on Tuesday.

Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc, the next in command since Prime Minister Reccep Tayyip Erdogan left the country on a visit to North Africa on Sunday, has arranged a meeting with protesters for Wednesday. Activist group the Taksim Solidarity Platform submitted a list of demands to Arinc ahead of the planned meeting, calling for the scrapping Gezi Park development plans, prohibition of teargas and the dismissal of top police chiefs in areas where protests have raged.
