Turkey: Besiktas protesters build barricades amid teargas

Clashes between police and anti-government protesters continued on Sunday night near Istanbul's Besiktas Stadium. Police used teargas and water cannons in an attempt to disperse the crowds, and demonstrators used debris to build barricades blocking the streets.

Turkey has been rocked this week and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey's Prime Minister, is facing a growing challenge as instability sets in. What started as a protest against the razing of trees in Taksim Gezi Park has mushroomed into a national protest movement against what protesters claim is Erdogan's authoritarianism and his Islamification of the Turkish secular state.

A number of factors contributed to the week's events. The planned development in central Istanbul which incurred into one of the few remaining green areas of the city was seen as emblematic of Erdogan's disregard for the wants of his citizenry. It follows his restrictions on the sale and consumption of alcohol.

The protest movement has brought together a diverse range of opinions, with opposition to the centralisation of power experienced under Erdogan and his support of a shift to a presidential system being key. Protesters are demanding that the Prime Minister resign.
