      Ukraine: School leavers soak up newly-found freedom

      Ukraine: School leavers soak up newly-found freedom

      High school graduates took their first dive into adulthood by plunging into fountains in Kiev's Independence Square to celebrate the Day of the Farewell Bell on Friday. Wearing outfits mimicking early 20th century school uniforms, the young men and women continued the Kievan tradition of hopping into the Independence Square fountain after the completion of official school leaving ceremonies.

      Despite the celebrations, it is not quite the end of the students' time at high school as final exams for their diplomas take place in June. The Day of the Farewell Bell is celebrated across Ukraine and the Russian Federation, with many school leavers taking advantage of the spring weather and seeking out local fountains for some fun.
