Syria: Syria "destined to fight" Israel, says Deputy Prime Minister

Syrian citizens must unite against attacks by Israel, says Syrian Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Quadri Jamil in an exclusive interview with RT Arabic. His comments come after two Israeli airstrikes hit the outskirts of the Syrian capital Damascus on May 3 and May 5.

"We are destined to fight," he says. "We advocate a peaceful solution to the issue of the occupied lands but the repeated Israeli attacks demand new forms of resistance, and popular resistance in the first place."

"We need to prevent the Israeli aggressor from trespassing on our territory and threatening the sovereignty of Syria. I regard the issue of the Golan Heights as a sovereignty issue. We can't budge on that one. Also, the liberation of the Golan Heights is a slogan that unites all the Syrian people - be it those who are loyal to the government or opposition activists."

Israel has claimed the airstrikes in Syria were aimed at stopping alleged weapons shipments to Hezbollah, a Lebanese political organisation with whom Israel has fought in the past, including a month-long war in 2006. Israeli forces have occupied a region of Syria known as the Golan heights since seizing the territory during the 1967 Six Day War.

The minister's comments came amid continuing fighting between government forces and militant groups. The conflict, which began in March 2011, has claimed more than 70,000 lives according to a February report by the United Nations.

Jamil is the founder of the People's Will Party, a Syrian political party that is part of a coalition known as the Popular Front for Change and Liberation. Founded in 2012, its full name is the National Committee for the Unity of Syrian Communists. Jamil has been in office as part of the ruling coalition since June 2012.
