France: Protests against approved same-sex marriage bill

Thousands of opponents against gay marriage and the same-sex adoption of children marched to Place des Invalides in Paris on Tuesday evening. The protest is in response to the French government passing a same-sex marriage bill earlier that afternoon.

The bill now makes it legal for same-sex couples to marry and adopt children, making France the 9th European country and the 14th around the world to legalise gay marriage.

The largest French opposition movement to same-sex marriage, La Manif Pour Tous, organised the mass mobilisation on Tuesday through their website telling people, "We will give up nothing! Nothing, never!". The protest began at Sevres-Babylone Metro station and moved through Paris until it reached Place des Invalides, near the National Assembly at around 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT). Protesters gave a moment of silence then sang the national anthem and other French hymns.

After 136 hours and 46 minutes of debate in the National Assembly, French politicians made a final vote on Tuesday approving marriage equality with the right to adopt with 331 for and 225 against out of 556 votes cast. One protester managed to enter the parliament building and disrupt the proceedings, but was swiftly removed. The president of the lower house of French Parliament, Claude Bartolone, said there would be no place for "enemies of democracy" and the voting process resumed.

French President Francois Hollande introduced same-sex marriage and adoption rights in November 2012 despite the right-wing UMP party saying they would repeal the law if it came into force.

Since Hollande's public approval of gay marriage La Manif pour Tous has organised regular protests in Paris that has brought thousands of people from across the country to rally against marriage for all.
