UK: Opponents of the "March for England" hemmed in by Police

United Kingdom, Brighton
April 21, 2013 at 13:23 GMT +00:00 · Published

Hundreds of people gathered in Brighton on Sunday in order to protest against the "March for England" rally, an event partly organised by the right-wing organisation the English Defence League (EDL). Chanting "racist scum off our streets!", the protesters were kept away from right-wing activists on the main march route by a heavy police presence.

The opponents of the march characterise the EDL as a fascist organisation. Violence erupted at last year's event, leading two police officers to suffer injuries. The EDL describes itself as a nationalist group that campaigns against what it calls "Islamic extremism." It rejects the labels "fascist" or "neo-Nazi" - terms that the Unite Against Fascism (UAF) campaign use to denote to the organisation.

The UAF is a pressure group that aims to warn British society about what it sees as the threat of fascism. It has strong links to the Socialist Workers Party, the UK's largest radical left-wing organisation.

This year's March for England is being held two day before St George's Day, England's "national day". Many of the officers were brought in from London to provide extra security for the annual march.
