Cyprus: Angry teens march on Presidential Palace
A wave of rallies held by teenagers have swept across Cyprus's capital Nicosia on Tuesday, with hundreds marching in the streets and scaling the the Presidential Palace gates. Demonstrators from across Cyprus gathered at the Parliament building and advanced towards the official residence and workplace of President Nicos Anastasiades. Held back by barriers, the students made their way across to the government building to voice their anger at the current economic crisis.
The rallies come in the wake of the chairman of the Bank of Cyprus, Andreas Artemis, resigning after a deal was reached with the EU and International Monetary Fund on Monday for a €10bn ($13bn) bailout package. Despite an agreement being made between eurozone leaders after tense negotiations, Cyprus's banks will remain closed for a further 48 hours after already ten days of closure. Cypriots have only had limited access to their funds, with the Central Bank of Cyprus imposing a €100 limit on ATM withdrawals per day, and growing fears from authorities that a bank run will happen.
